When’s the last time you started over?
It wasn’t too long ago for me.
Almost two years ago, some guys on my team came to me with the idea of creating an online course based on how I’ve helped build the career of Andy Andrews, the New York Times best-selling author and speaker I’ve managed for over 30 years.
Basically, the idea was to create a series of videos that would show aspiring authors, speakers, and entertainers what they need to do to build the foundation for a lasting career. We called it Career Crash Course.
I loved the idea of the course, but I hated that I would be the one on the screen. I have never once claimed to have the slightest clue as to what I’m doing with Andy’s career. There is no foolproof system, no blueprint for success in this business. Lord knows I wish there was.
“Robert,” the guys said to me, “you don’t have to claim you have all the answers…all you have to do is tell people what has worked for you and how they can apply those things to themselves.”
With guarded optimism, I agreed. But I won’t lie—the fact that many people have made lots of money creating and selling online courses was a big motivating factor as well.
The team and I immediately created a plan that looked like this:
- Build a platform that will allow us to find an audience that will want this course. (This platform became TheRobertD.com.)
- Grow and connect with the audience by building an email list. Build the email list by creating a free eBook visitors will receive when they sign up. (The original free eBook idea was 20,000 Days and Counting. That idea was derailed when Andy’s publisher at Thomas Nelson said he wanted to publish the book. I then created Battle-Tested Branding for the free eBook offer.)
- Release the course, provide HUGE value to everyone who goes through it, and create enough new income to dramatically expand the number of people we influence.
- Cry out to God daily and ask if He’s truly SURE that this is what I need to be doing. (I’ve always been a “behind-the-scenes” person. One of the biggest arguments Andy and I ever had was when he mentioned my name on a TV interview.)
Two years later, I’ve somehow succeeded with steps one, two, and four, while completely skipping over three…which was the whole reason we started this process in the first place!
Why did that happen? Because I had to start over. Twice.
The first time we filmed the course we had no clue what we were doing. The message was getting lost and the video quality/direction was poor because we had a team of people who had little to no video experience.
So we started over. Guess what? The same thing happened again.
I could not believe it. How could I screw this up twice? I’ve presented the content in this course to SO many people in consulting sessions and have seen it change so many careers and businesses that I know it’s great content. But I still wasn’t getting it right. And there’s nothing worse than releasing something you’re not proud to put your name on.
So we started over. And this time, we’ve totally changed the format and I’m finally excited again. Starting over may turn out to be the best thing that happened for us. Yet, initially, I absolutely did not want to. I either wanted to scrap it or get it out the door. Starting over felt like failing. But it’s not. Think about it…
Daily, you have to start over in so many areas of your life.
You have to start over with a shower. You have to start over with a meal. Every few seconds you have to take another breath. You are starting over then, too. Each one may seem the same, but is new and unique in its own way.
Though we pretend this isn’t true, we start over every single day with all aspects of life—our businesses, our families, our friendships. Just because the day before was one way doesn’t mean it has to be that way today.
Isn’t this a rejuvenating way of looking at life?
You can reset your life on a daily, moment-by-moment basis. Do not be afraid of starting over. It is as natural as the very air you are breathing.
What will you “start over” today?
I feel that it would be a crime NOT to tell you that Amazon is running a special on Andy’s first novel, The Traveler’s Gift, today for only 99 cents! For anyone starting over, reading this book is like pouring rocket fuel on whatever you’re starting. :-) Click here for the deal.
